I released the 2024 Cryptid Quarterly Authors of the Year on March 12, and today I follow up with the Top 10 Cryptid Quarterly Books of the Year. I released four Cryptid Quarterly Top 10 Lists in 2024, spotlighting 40 cryptid fiction titles. If you add the 66 honorable mentions, I actually highlighted a total of 106 releases.
Cryptid fiction is my favorite sub-genre of horror. As I mentioned in my Authors of the Year post, I write a column for HorrorAddicts.net called The Bigfoot Files, and I compile a monthly Horror Fiction Top 25 list for MalevolentDark.com. During my research for those two features, I discover quite a lot of cryptid fiction, and that’s the genesis of the Cryptid Quarterly Top 10 Lists.
Where did my love of cryptids begin? Probably when I saw Bigfoot on an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man as a young boy in the 1970s. I personally don’t know any of the authors on these lists, but I suspect a couple of them were probably as intrigued as I was when they watched Bigfoot lumbering through the woods in slow motion to those cheesy bionic sound effects. Of course, Bigfoot isn’t the only cryptid on this list, but he’s far and away my favorite.
While the Top 10 Books of the Year List features stories about Bigfoot, it also includes tales about a vengeful Dogman, a mutant snakehead, and a legendary skinwalker. If you read cryptid fiction, you’ll likely be familiar with some of these books’ writers. Six of them are among the Top 10 Cryptid Quarterly Authors of the Year.
Like with all my lists, I use a personally developed point system with a combination of factors, including Amazon/Goodreads ratings and reviews, recognitions, and media buzz. With this list, I actually revisited Amazon and checked the latest ratings and reviews on all 106 releases from 2024, including the honorable mentions. So, each one received a score. That created an annual Top 10 List that featured a few surprises to me. For example, two books that didn’t make the Top 10 on any of my quarterly lists finished in the Top 10 on the year-end tally. Finally, I limited this annual list to one book per author.
The single dominating trend is that nine of the Top 10 books are titles in a series. Some series would be better to read starting with the first book, but with others it’s not necessary. What the trend tells me is these authors are delivering consistently entertaining reads to an appreciative audience. It doesn’t mean stand-alone titles were unpopular. Three of the next five books ranked outside the Top 10 were stand-alone titles. That’s just the way it panned out.
Again, I’ll repeat what I wrote in my Authors of the Year post: “My only motivation for compiling Cryptid Quarterly is to help fans of cryptid horror fiction like me find a neat new author or title that they may have missed in the wilds of the Amazon publishing jungle. There’s no controversy here. There’s no drama. I’m simply sharing my enjoyment of cryptid horror in my spare time. Feel free to comment below and recommend your favorite cryptid authors and books.”
Without further ado, here are the 2024 Cryptid Quarterly Books of the Year, according to Cryptid Quarterly. Clicking on the titles takes you to their Amazon pages where the books can be purchased. Happy reading!

Length: 349 pages
Amazon rating: 4.4 stars
2024 Cryptid Quarterly rank: #1 in Quarter I
Amazon description: I didn’t sign up for this. I never wanted to be a cryptid hunter. I didn’t even believe in cryptids. I always thought they were the stuff of bedtime stories to keep kids quiet and in bed, scared out of their wits, when mom and dad wanted some quality time together. I was perfectly happy in my boring job as a park ranger, but fate had other ideas. When I came face-to-face with a Bigfoot … everything changed. Some people are born to greatness, others have it thrust upon them. Then there are still others who trip, fall down a hill backwards, and land face first in a big stinky, steaming, pile of greatness. I was the latter. This is the story of that steaming pile that was my life as a cryptid hunter.
