AUTHOR INTERVIEW | Emerian Rich

Horror Hostess Emerian Rich created HorrorAddicts.net as a forum for other creators to explore all aspects of the horror lifestyle. Her latest project, Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2, brings together years of that exploration and packs everything into one book. And we’re talking EVERYTHING.

Here’s the book’s description:

“Do you love the horror genre? Do you look at horror as a lifestyle? Do the ‘norms’ not understand your love of the macabre? Despair no longer, my friend, for within your grasp is a book written by those who look at horror as a way of life, just like you. This is your guide to living a horror addict’s life.

“Our month-by-month almanac with important dates, movie lists, puzzles, crafts, articles, and recipes will guarantee your whole year is occupied with delightful horror activities. Don’t miss our monster guide with articles about vampires, zombies, ghosts, and some creatures that just can’t be categorized. Enjoy interviews with creators of horror content and hear perspectives from different cultures and backgrounds. Read stories of real hauntings, nightmares, and vile vacations.”

Rich is an author, artist, voice actress, and editor who goes by the nickname Emz. She is best known as the Horror Hostess of HorrorAddicts.net, an internationally acclaimed horror podcast, now in its 17th season. Rich is the author of the vampire series Night’s Knights and has been published in more than 40 fiction anthologies. Visit her website — emzbox.com — for more information.

Rich published the first Horror Addicts Guide to Life in 2015 with no plans for a second one. But with all the craziness in the world over the past few years, Horror Addicts were apparently primed for an update as Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2 debuted as the #1 New Release in the Philosophy Reference category on Amazon.

Emerian Rich

Without further ado, here is my exclusive email interview with the Horror Hostess, Emerian Rich.

It’s been almost seven years since the first Horror Addicts Guide to Life (HAGL). What took so long?

I didn’t know there would even be another Horror Addicts Guide to Life. It wasn’t something I planned on. We did a pretty good job of covering topics in the first one that Horror Addicts would enjoy, and it wasn’t until recently that I felt we needed an update.

Why is now the time for a second HAGL?

The preceding years have changed the Horror genre so much. Whether it’s what the pandemic did to us and our viewing habits, or the fact that we as a genre have been opening her hearts and minds to new voices previously unheard, the genre has come a long way. I wanted to explore new topics we weren’t discussing back then.

How different is the HAGL 2 from the original HAGL?

We made this new version in a workbook size. We added many more fun puzzles, games, and crafts that we hope will inspire the Horror Addicts in their everyday lives. It still has in-depth interviews, articles about what Horror fans love, and recipes, but now they are alongside monster articles, coloring pages, and activities.

What’s your favorite part of HAGL 2?

There isn’t a speck in this book that I didn’t want in there. I hand-picked every single article, puzzle, recipe, and craft. So, it’s all my favorite! My favorite thing about the book in general is that it fits every mood a reader might have. If I’m serious and want to really think, there are in-depth articles and interviews. If I feel playful, I can do a puzzle or color. If I am feeling crafty, I can grab my gun glue and create.

What is the #1 thing you hope readers get from this book?

FUN! And a sense of kinship. There aren’t many books like this that explore the lives of Horror Addicts and allow them to join in the discussion. This workbook style really encourages readers to join in.

Horror Addicts Guide to Life 2 is available now at Amazon.com.
