Gabino Iglesias takes home top honor at 2022 Bram Stoker Awards

The third time was the charm for Gabino Iglesias. His book The Devil Takes You Home won Superior Achievement in a Novel at the 2022 Bram Stoker Awards. It was Iglesias’s first Stoker win, but he was previously nominated in 2020 for Long Fiction (“Beyond the Reef”) and in 2018 for Fiction Collection (Coyote Songs). Iglesias is also the first Latino to win the award.

The 2022 Bram Stoker Awards are the horror genre’s premier literary award and organized by the Horror Writers Association. This year, the awards were presented at a banquet on June 17 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, during StokerCon 2023. Watch the ceremony on YouTube by clicking HERE.

All the winners in the five Novel categories were first-time recipients with Christi Nogle, Daniel Kraus, James Aquilone, and Robert P. Ottone winning along with Iglesias. Other first-time winners were Alma Katsu, Cassandra Khaw, and Cynthia Pelayo, who’s the first Stoker Award recipient born in Puerto Rico and the first Latina.

The Black Phone screenwriters Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill tied for Superior Achievement in a Screenplay with Stranger Things showrunners The Duffer Brothers. The Stoker wins were also firsts for them.

The night wasn’t all about first-time winners. Ellen Datlow, a 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, won her eighth Stoker Award. Lee Murray, a 2019 Mentor of the Year, won her fifth; and Tim Waggoner, a 2016 Mentor of the Year, won his fourth. Mercedes M. Yardley won her second award.

In previously announced HWA news, Elizabeth Massie, Nuzo Onoh, and John Saul received Lifetime Achievement Awards. Undertow Publications, founded by Michael Kelly in 2009, received the Specialty Press Award. Meghan Arcuri received The Richard Laymon President’s Award for her dedicated volunteerism to the HWA.
